Symptoms and Diagnosis
Children with lead poisoning can exhibit symptoms common to dozens of childhood illnesses, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis. A child suffering from lead poisoning may exhibit the following symptoms:
- Sluggish behavior
- Hyperactive behavior
- Headaches
- Seizures
- Constipation
- Irritability
- Tremors
- Loss of consciousness
- Muscle weakness
- Abdominal cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Stomach pain or discomfort
Worse case, many children can be completely without symptoms, so it is important that all children get tested. Tests for lead poisoning take a simple finger prick to determine the level of lead in the blood. X-rays are an alternate method of lead testing, but are more costly. Once the level of lead in the blood is determined, your physician will discuss the treatment options
