Other than going public, startup founders dream of one thing above all else: Cracking the Digital 100. Becoming one of the most valuable privately held startups brings prestige, opportunity, and acclaim, creating intense competition for the top spots. Here are 2011’s Digital 100 Startups (including newcomers) and where they are located. Up and coming Startups frequently assign themselves outrageously high valuations (using preferred stock and sweetheart terms) that real investors would never agree to. The Digital 100 Attempts to remedy this by looking at common stock values – the prices the stock market might put on the company in real trading. This graphic will show you company valuations from Facebook all the way too Rightscale. Some of which you will probably never heard of but be aware of what these companies have accomplished. Especially for the 33 newcomers that have pushed their way on to the list – some ranking quite high.

Everyone believes that most of the worlds digital startups are in San Francisco, when in fact only 10% of them are in the U.S. – of all digital startups in the United States, 35% are in the New York area and only a bit over 10% are in Silicon Valley. Once you limit to California, over 37% of digital companies are in the Bay Area and only 11% of California startups are in Southern California with the LA area representing only 3% of the state total.
